Feeling nervous about your first trip to the Longmont Buddhist Temple? Not to worry! We know it’s intimidating to go outside your comfort zone and visit a new place or religion. One thing we pride ourselves on at LBT is being a warm and friendly place, open to everyone. Below are some commonly asked question and answers to help you get ready for your first visit. You can find additional information under the Newcomer tab including basic information about Shin Buddhism and etiquette. Don’t stress about the etiquette though. We know this may be brand new for many people and it takes time to learn. We believe in a supportive and encouraging environment, free from judgements.
How much do I need to know about Buddhism?
Absolutely nothing! Whether you’re just curious about what takes place at temple or you’ve been practicing Buddhism for years, everyone is welcome. In fact, just coming to temple is the best way to learn about Buddhism and experience the Dharma.
What do I wear to temple? Do I take my shoes off?
Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move freely without being uncomfortable. Your clothing should be neat and clean, not too flashy or revealing. You are not required to take off your shoes, but may notice some members do. Beware though, we sometimes get goatheads – those are spiky burs from the plants out front. Socks are recommended.
What takes place at the temple?
We usually follow the same rhythm for services: There is a tour and Q&A session for newcomers. Then sitting meditation followed by a Dharma talk. We burn incense (called Oshoko) – someone will show you how if you’re new. Following the service, we have tea and chat. Other days we have a meditation class (appropriate for all levels) and a Buddhism class (all questions are welcome). No matter what is happening at temple that day, you are invited to join.
Do I need to RSVP? Does it cost anything to attend?
You don’t need to RSVP or call ahead. You can attend any class or service at any time. All classes and services are free, but we ask if you have the means, consider supporting the temple financially through donations or purchasing a membership. The donations go towards utilities, building insurance and upkeep, etc. Any donation is greatly appreciated.
