Many people ask, “what is Pure Land Buddhism?” Some are even confused on if Pure Land is ‘real Buddhism,’ while others suggest it is a Christian form of Buddhism. In a nutshell, Pure Land is part of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition and can be traced back to the historical Buddha and Sangha itself. In other words, it is real Buddhism and not connected to Christianity. Rather than emanating from the Middle East, Buddhism comes from an Asian culture and perspective. In this view, Buddhism is not meant to be learned and obeyed like other religions; it is to be experienced through immersion in the teachings. Much like the difference between studying the theory of buoyancy in water and actually entering the water and learning to swim.
